The seven main research methods are:
1. Experiments
Designed with scientific method
Only method with cause and effect
Includes control groups and independent variables/dependent/confounding variables
2. Correlational Studies
Discover if two or more variables are related and how
Correlation does not equal causation
3. Survey Research
Allow researchers to acquire large amounts of data quickly
The way you ask changes the response
4. Naturalistic Observations
A subject is observed in their natural habitat without interference
Harry Harlow and baby monkeys
5. Case Studies
A single person or event that is studied
The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat
by Oliver Sacks
6. Longitudinal Studies
A study that has to go for at least 5 years, and most go to 20
Twin studies are very common; researchers compare their personalities over time
Twin Astronauts - one went to space for a year while the other stayed on Earth
7. Cross-Sectional Studies
Takes bits of several or all methods
You need at least two different types of studies - performing an experiment to prove a theory after a longitudinal study.
